The Best Weekend Getaways From Bangalore Nobody Talks About

If you live in Bangalore and you've been searching for a weekend trip, you've probably read the same three articles. Coorg. Ooty. Chikmagalur. These are good places — but they're also the places every other person from Bangalore is at on the same weekend you're there. Here are some alternatives worth knowing about.

Anthargange, Karnataka (60 km)

Anthargange is a rocky hill near Kolar with natural caves formed by volcanic activity. The terrain is unlike anything else within two hours of Bangalore — boulders the size of houses, narrow passages, and views across the Deccan plateau. The cave trek is best done at night with a guide.

Sakleshpur, Karnataka (180 km)

Sakleshpur sits in the Western Ghats coffee belt and gets a fraction of Coorg's visitors despite being equally beautiful. The Bisle Ghat viewpoint looks out over three districts on a clear day, and the old Shiradi Ghat railway track is one of the most scenic walks in South India.

Gandikota, Andhra Pradesh (370 km)

Four hours from Bangalore is a medieval fort sitting at the edge of a gorge that most people don't know exists. Gandikota requires an overnight trip but rewards you with complete silence, a remarkable night sky, and the feeling of having found something undiscovered. Camping is permitted inside the fort.

Hogenakkal Falls, Tamil Nadu (180 km)

The Cauvery river drops over ancient Precambrian rocks in a series of falls dramatic enough to be called the 'Niagara of India'. Hogenakkal is best in the monsoon and post-monsoon season. The coracle boat rides through the falls are genuinely thrilling.

Shivanasamudra, Karnataka (130 km)

India's second largest waterfall by volume, three hours from Bangalore, visited by almost nobody outside Karnataka. The Cauvery splits into two falls here — Gaganachukki and Barachukki — and the surrounding island has a 9th century temple complex. Best between July and November.

The pattern here is that Bangalore's best weekend escapes require slightly more effort to find. The tourist infrastructure hasn't caught up with them, which means the experience is still authentic. If you'd rather someone else handle the research and just tell you where to show up — that's exactly what we do.
